The History Of Truong Tien Bridge Hue

From 1460 to 1497, a rattan bridge was built for an easier commute between two sides of the city. Then, it was reconstructed to become a wood bridge crossing the Huong River.

In 1987, Truong Tien Bridge was constructed following the French architect’s design. The material to rebuild is the reel. You will be surprised because the architect who designed Truong Tien Bridge is so famous in the world. He is the one who designed many global well-known architectural works such as the Eiffel Tower (France) and the Statue of Freedom (U.S.A).

The bridge was completed at 401.1 meters in length and 6.2 meters in width in In 1899. It had a total of 6 steel girders in a semicircle shape. At that time, it was named “Thanh Thai” following one of the Nguyen Dynasty King’s names. Unfortunately, the bridge was damaged due to a strong storm. In 1906, the bridge was reconstructed. There was thick concrete covering all bridge’s surface. 

Specifically, in 1907, the French government occupied Hue City and exiled King Thanh Thai to the French island called Reunion Island. Then, the French changed the bridge’s name to Clemenceau. In 1937, the bridge was damaged again due to the wars against French Colonial and American Empires. From 1899 and 1969, the bridge had a total of three times collapsed into the Huong River due to the war.

In 1991, the bridge was renovated with a more beautiful appearance and named Trang Tien Bridge after the Southern Liberation and National Reunification. However, in 2004, its name was changed once more time to Truong Tien Bridge.

Significantly, since 2002, the local federal has installed a colorful lighting system on the bridge. At night, the bridge is more gorgeous than ever. It has soon become the typical icon to boost tourism development in Hue City.
