The North Vietnamese army held the church while the American and South Vietnamese forces fought to get it back with machine-gun fire, grenades, and even shells from warships for 81 days.

Next, we will visit Doc Mieu Firebase– located on the east of the National Highway 1A. Doc Mieu was the former American base, just 7km to the South of Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River, once part of ‘the McNamara Line. 

Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River – Hien Luong Bridge spans the banks of the Ben Hai River. A historic witness of the Vietnam War. Nowadays, it has just been rebuilt because the original Hien Luong Bridge was damaged by American bombs in 1967. At the time, it was painted half red and half yellow, a border to remind that this was a physical and ideological boundary separating the two zones, North and South of Vietnam.

Vinh Moc Tunnels were constructed with 3 levels at 10m, 15m, and 20-23m deep to protect the villagers of Quang Tri. Under the tunnels, there are enough things to live for a whole village such as ventilation, a meeting room, freshwater wells, and eventually, a generator, and lights. The underground village was also equipped with schools, clinics, toilets, and a maternity room where 17 children were born.
