From 1809 to 1954

The project of building Quang Tri ancient citadel had taken about 28 years to complete. It started in 1809 and was accomplished in 1837, which means that the building of this citadel prolonged from Gia Long King to Ming Mang King.

Most citadel parts were rebuilt to preserve historical values as well as a memorial marking 81 days and nights in 1972. The Spring-Summer 1972 campaign – 81-day-and-night combat 

In 1972, as a part of the Spring-Summer 1972 campaign, the Second Battle of Quang Tri lasted for 81 days and nights between the US – Allies and the Liberation Army of South Vietnam from 28 June to 16 September.

There were about between 150 and 170 jet planes as also nearly 70 flying fortresses throwing bombs every night in Quang Tri. Death, pain, and dilapidation could be seen everywhere, on the street, especially in 17 parallel and Quang Tri citadel.

The US and Allies (Republic of Vietnam) successfully occupied the Quang Tri Citadel in 1972 but not succeeded in uniting half of the Northern Quang Tri province.

During The Vietnam War

After 81 days and nights, there were 328,000 tons of bombs and bullets attacking Quang Tri citadel land. Many soldiers died on this battlefield. Only a few people luckily survived after taking missions crossing Thach Han River and participating on the battlefield, which was evidence of how cruel the war was.

Until Paris Agreement was signed and accepted, the US withdrew its troops from Vietnam’s sovereignty. This event played a key role in unifying independent Vietnam later.

Post-Vietnam War

After the Vietnam War, the citadel of Quang Tri was recognized as a national historical relic of the country. Due to the thousand deaths of Vietnamese here, the government decided to build a typical cemetery. In 1972, the memorial was at the central Quang Tri to commemorate the soldier who passed away in the war.
