Main Features And Functions

Khe Sanh Combat Base nestles in a red-soil valley, which is 400 meters above the sea. Plus, it has a preferable geography with rivers and mountains and, especially, lies on the No.9 Road—a strategic road in the north of South Vietnam back then.

Therefore, at the beginning of the Vietnam War, the US military found out the important position of the base de Khe Sanh. This road has led to both Laos and the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail.

These features caused the American Army and the Republic of Vietnam to select Khe Sanh as their “inviolable base.” They established the McNamara Line electronic barrier along No.9 Road, across Khe Sanh Base, in the hope that support resources from North Vietnam wouldn’t reach the South.
