Monkey Mountain & Why It is special?

Monkey Mountain, officially known as Son Tra Peninsula, is one of the most beautiful natural destinations in Central Vietnam. Located on the northeastern side of Da Nang, it combines tropical forests, coastal scenery, and clear East Sea views in one trip. From Hoi An, it is an easy half-day or full-day escape that takes just over an hour by car. Travelers who love photography, nature, Buddhism, or peaceful ocean views will find it especially rewarding.

✓ Spectacular Coastal Scenery

The winding road around Son Tra Peninsula offers some of the best coastal views in Central Vietnam, with beaches, fishing boats, and blue sea stretching to the horizon. Several viewpoints along the route are perfect for memorable photos, especially on clear mornings.

✓ Home of the Magnificent Lady Buddha

At Linh Ung Pagoda, visitors can see the 67-meter Lady Buddha, the tallest Buddha statue in Vietnam, standing gracefully above Da Nang Bay.

✓ Rich Biodiversity

Son Tra is an important nature reserve that protects hundreds of plant species and rare animals, including the colorful Red-Shanked Douc Langur. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but early morning and late afternoon offer the best chance to spot them.

✓ A Peaceful Escape

With fresh mountain air, shaded forest roads, and quiet spiritual sites, Monkey Mountain offers a calm break from the busy streets of Da Nang and Hoi An. Many visitors say that the scenic drive itself is one of the highlights of their Vietnam trip.

Hoi An to Monkey Mountain Private Car Itinerary

Our itinerary is flexible. The schedule below is the most popular option for international travelers, but you can customize the stops based on your interests.

Hotel Pickup in Hoi An

Your journey begins with pickup directly from your hotel, resort, villa, or homestay in Hoi An at your preferred departure time. You will relax in a modern air-conditioned vehicle while our local driver handles the route.

As you travel north toward Da Nang, you will pass rice fields, local villages, and coastal scenery before reaching Son Tra Peninsula.

Optional Stop at Man Thai Beach

Before climbing Monkey Mountain, many travelers enjoy a short stop at Man Thai Beach, one of Da Nang’s peaceful seaside spots.

With soft sand, clear water, and a quiet atmosphere, it is a great place to stretch your legs and take photos. If you prefer to spend more time on the peninsula, this stop can easily be skipped.

Visit Linh Ung Pagoda

The first major attraction on Monkey Mountain is the peaceful Linh Ung Pagoda. Completed in 2010, this Buddhist complex has become one of Da Nang’s most famous spiritual landmarks.

Its gardens, courtyards, lotus ponds, and traditional architecture create a calm atmosphere for visitors.

Even if you are not religious, the peaceful setting makes this a lovely place to slow down and enjoy Son Tra Peninsula. Please dress respectfully by covering your chest and knees.

Admire the Lady Buddha Statue

Beside Linh Ung Pagoda stands the magnificent Lady Buddha Statue, one of Central Vietnam’s most recognizable landmarks.

Towering above the coastline, the 67m Lady Buddha statue overlooks Da Nang Bay and symbolizes protection for local fishermen.

From the viewing platform, you can enjoy panoramic views of: Da Nang City, Mân Thái Beach, Tien Sa Port, the East Sea, the Marble Mountains in the distance

This is one of the best photography spots, especially in the morning when the light is soft. Most visitors spend around 30–45 minutes here.

Scenic Drive Through Son Tra Peninsula

After leaving Linh Ung Pagoda, continue deeper into the peninsula. This drive is often considered the highlight of the trip. The winding mountain roads pass through tropical forest and reveal spectacular viewpoints over cliffs and turquoise water.

Unlike crowded tourist buses, a private car lets you stop whenever you find a beautiful view. Your driver will gladly suggest the best photo spots.

Ban Co Peak (Chessboard Peak)

If weather conditions permit, continue to Ban Co Peak, the highest accessible viewpoint on Son Tra Peninsula.

Located about 700 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of Da Nang City, the coastline, Hai Van Pass, and the East Sea.

According to local legend, two celestial beings once played chess here, leaving behind the stone chessboard that gives the peak its name.

The fresh air and sweeping scenery make this one of the most rewarding stops on the peninsula.

Thousand-Year Banyan Tree (Optional)

Nature lovers may wish to visit the legendary Thousand-Year Banyan Tree. Estimated to be nearly 1,000 years old, this remarkable tree has enormous roots and branches spreading in every direction.

The surrounding forest is quiet, cool, and ideal for travelers who enjoy nature and photography.

Son Tra Radar Station

For guests interested in military history and panoramic landscapes, an optional stop at the Son Tra Radar Station can be included. Often called the “Eye of Indochina,” this strategic location offers wide views over the coastline and surrounding mountains. Please note that access may vary depending on current regulations.

Wildlife Spotting Opportunities

One of the unique experiences on Monkey Mountain is searching for the rare Red-Shanked Douc Langur. These colorful primates are among the peninsula’s most treasured inhabitants.

Because they live freely in the forest, sightings depend on luck and timing. Early morning is usually the best time to look for them. Our drivers know the areas where langurs are often seen, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

Return Journey to Hoi An

After exploring Monkey Mountain, your driver will take you comfortably back to Hoi An. If time allows, you may request extra photo stops along the coastal road before returning to your accommodation.

The trip ends with convenient drop-off at your hotel, leaving you with unforgettable memories of one of Central Vietnam’s most scenic destinations.
